What's actually in DFW tap water

Two separate things cause almost every water complaint we hear — and they're not the same problem, even though people often lump them together.

That's "Hard" on the standard scale — enough dissolved calcium and magnesium to cause scale buildup, dry skin, and spotty dishes. It comes from the geology water passes through on its way to the tap, not from anything the city does wrong. Every DFW ZIP code we serve reads somewhere between 10 and 16+ gpg.

Separately, municipal water treatment adds chlorine or chloramine to keep water safe to drink on its way through the pipes. It works — but it's also what gives DFW tap water that faint pool-like taste and smell some people notice, especially straight from the tap or in a glass that's sat out.

Not vague warnings — here's the real mechanism behind each one, and why it adds up faster than people expect.

Skin, hair, and soap that never quite works

Calcium and magnesium ions react with soap before it can lather properly, forming a sticky mineral residue (technically called soap scum) that clings to skin and hair instead of rinsing away. That residue is what actually causes the dry, tight, itchy feeling after a shower — not the water itself. It's also why hard water areas use noticeably more shampoo and body wash to get the same clean feeling as soft water. Independent testing funded by the Water Quality Research Foundation (WQRF) — the research arm of the water treatment industry's trade association — found it can take two to three times as much soap in very hard water to achieve the same result as soft water.

Water heaters — the single most expensive impact

Every time hard water is heated, dissolved calcium and magnesium precipitate out of solution and form a hard scale layer on heating elements and tank walls — the same chemistry that builds up in a kettle, just inside your water heater instead. That layer acts as insulation, forcing the unit to work harder and longer to heat the same amount of water. The Battelle Memorial Institute's widely-cited water heater study found roughly a 4% efficiency loss for every 5 grains per gallon of hardness — at DFW's real 12-16 gpg range, that's roughly 10-13% lost efficiency already, climbing to as much as 48% over a full 15-year lifetime as scale keeps building year after year. The same study found water heaters running on softened water held their original factory efficiency rating the entire 15 years.

Pipes, fixtures, and water pressure

The same scale that builds up in a water heater builds up inside pipes and fixtures too — just more slowly, since the water isn't being heated there. Over years, that buildup narrows the effective diameter of pipes, which shows up as gradually dropping water pressure and, eventually, a higher chance of a real plumbing repair. The math is simple geometry: since flow depends on a pipe's cross-sectional area (not just its width), even a thin scale layer removes a disproportionate share of the opening.

Appliances — dishwashers, washing machines, coffee makers

Any appliance that heats or moves water gets the same scale buildup. Dishwashers leave the cloudy film on glassware that no amount of extra detergent fixes — that's mineral deposit, not a cleaning failure. Washing machines lose efficiency and can leave fabric feeling stiff, since detergent can't fully dissolve and rinse in hard water. WQRF-funded testing found dishwasher detergent needs dropped by up to 70% when the same wash was run on softened water.

Many dishwasher and tankless water heater manufacturers specify hardness limits directly in their warranty terms — commonly requiring water under 7 gpg, with coverage often void entirely above 10-12 gpg. At DFW's regional average, a lot of homes are technically already outside those terms without realizing it.

What this actually adds up to, per year

Add up the five things above — extra energy for water heating, extra soap and detergent, faster appliance wear, and plumbing service calls — and independent research (Water Quality Research Foundation-funded studies) puts the typical cost at around $800 a year for an average hard-water household. Some industry estimates run higher, up to $1,000+ a year, depending on household size and how hard your specific water actually is. Either way: it's a real, ongoing cost, not a one-time inconvenience — and it's the same math whether or not anyone ever mentions it to you.

How each type of treatment really works

Three genuinely different technologies solve three different problems. Here's the real mechanism behind each one — not just what it's called.

Solves: hardness

Ion exchange water softening

A softener is filled with tiny resin beads coated in sodium ions. As hard water passes through, the resin grabs onto the calcium and magnesium ions and swaps them for sodium — a straightforward chemical trade, not a filter catching particles. The water that comes out the other side is genuinely soft, not just "treated."

Why the salt tank matters: after the resin's sodium supply runs low, the system automatically runs a regeneration cycle — flushing the resin with a concentrated salt-water brine that recharges it with fresh sodium ions and rinses the collected calcium/magnesium down the drain. This is why softeners need a salt tank kept filled; it's not optional maintenance, it's how the core mechanism keeps working.

Catalytic carbon filtration

This is a genuinely different technology from softening — it doesn't touch hardness at all. Catalytic carbon media has a specially activated surface that speeds up a chemical reaction breaking down chlorine and chloramine into harmless, odorless components as water flows through. That's why it fixes taste and smell specifically, at every tap in the house, not just where a pitcher filter sits on the counter.

Solves: drinking water quality

Reverse osmosis (RO)

RO is the most thorough filtration available for a single tap — it forces water through a semi-permeable membrane with pores small enough to block dissolved minerals, most contaminants, and particles that carbon filtration alone doesn't remove. Because it's slower and more intensive than the other two methods, it's typically installed at one point of use (the kitchen sink) rather than for the whole house.

Myth

"Hard water isn't a real problem — it's just marketing from softener companies."

Fact

Hard water is safe to drink — that's true. But scale buildup, dry skin and hair, appliance strain, and warranty exposure are measurable effects of basic water chemistry, not something anyone invented to sell you a system. The real source of skepticism is usually the "free in-home test" sales visit that oversells the urgency — a fair thing to distrust. The underlying chemistry itself isn't in question.

Myth

"A pitcher or fridge filter does the same thing as a whole-home system."

Fact

Pitcher and fridge filters treat only the water that passes through them — never your shower, dishwasher, washing machine, or water heater. Whole-home softening and carbon filtration treat every drop entering the house, at the point it enters, not just what you happen to pour through a small filter.

"A water softener will also fix bad-tasting or smelly water."

Fact

Softening only removes hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) — it doesn't touch chlorine or chloramine, which is what actually causes taste and odor. That's a genuinely different mechanism, handled by catalytic carbon filtration instead. A lot of people install a softener expecting better-tasting water and are surprised it doesn't change.

Myth

"No visible buildup on my faucets means I don't have a hard water problem."

Fact

By the time you can see spots on a faucet, scale has already been building up for a while inside your water heater, pipes, and appliances — the places it does the most real damage. Visible spotting on fixtures is actually one of the last places hard water shows up, not the first.

"I have city water, so it's already treated — I don't need anything else."

Fact

City treatment makes water safe to drink, which is a real and important job — but it doesn't address hardness at all, and the chlorine or chloramine added during that same treatment process is what actually causes the taste and smell people notice. "Treated" and "soft" are two completely different things.

Myth

"Softened water will kill my grass and garden."

Fact

This one's grounded in something real — over years, consistent irrigation with softened water isn't ideal for lawns and gardens. That's exactly why a bypass valve for outdoor spigots is standard on whole-home installs: your sprinklers and hose bibs keep running on the original untreated water, while only your indoor plumbing gets the softened supply.
